Personal:

I was a single mom.  Two times over.  We all survived, despite the fact that I make atrocious decisions.  Then, I met a man I didn't deserve.  And he loves me so much.  And I love him. We lived in sin and bought a house for two years then hired a judge and officially got married(to our great delight and also the delight of our mothers), then a month later he was diagnosed with cancer.  Well we survived all that and he's 100% fine now.  But, we're really out of shape and really busy with kids and jobs and running just isn't my priority and there's so many other layers to all of it, but I'm running anyway.  This is my failure blog now.  Just to log that one run a week if I snag it.
Somehow that matters and I want that run recorded.

Horrible run today.  The plan was 1 mile warm-up, 6.2 mile tempo, and 1 mile cool down.  Well the new year had a nasty surprise for me.  I felt good during the warm-up, and kicked into the tempo feeling strong.  It started out GREAT.  I was cooking along at well under 8:00 pace and feeling pretty comfortable doing out--got about 3 miles and some change into it and then BAM my right ankle blew up.  No warning.  I felt that familiar tug on the outside, and my gait immediately turned into a limp-run.  The tempo run came to a screeching halt.  Jogging very slowly and limpy, I went a few more miles in denial to see if it would settle down.  I know what it is, because I experienced this with my left ankle several months ago.  Pereoneal tendonitis appears again.  The good news is that it is not as severe, I don't think.  I am still able to walk without limping--a plus.   I came home, did my ankle stretches, popped 800 of motrin, and plunged my ankles into a fifteen minute ice bath.  I am 16 days away from my half and I have already paid the money.  So maybe there is a little denial going on here, but I think I can nip this thing in the bud in a few days if I am aggressive with treating it.   I am not looking forward to the elliptical machine but I foresee its use for a few days at least.

Update: Ok I have calmed down now. I have been walking around at work so far with no limp and no problems. Ankle seems fine. My ankles seem very sensitive to even the slightest bank in the road--I have been running on the right shoulder a lot to make my left ankle feel better but now my right ankle is mad. Sooo..I think I will be able to run tomorrow but it will have to be either the treadmill or a track. Time to start looking for some bike trails and maybe limited running on sidewalks as too much concrete could cause other problems.

Anyhow HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Oh yeah I measured the distance I had gotten in the tempo with my time and it puts me at 7:34 pace for 3.17 miles before I was so rudely interrupted--that's a good pace for me so I am happy about that!

When I first started running I always could notice by the pain in my knee what side of the road I was running on. Keep that cardio going for your race and good luck.

AWESOME Pace!!! Sorry about your ankle. 16 days to mend....no need to panic. (I know easier said than done).

How did work go for you on New Year's?

From seeaprilrun on Fri, Jan 02, 2009 at 13:36:08

Burt--can you still tell now or did your body finally get used to it?

Jodi--New Year's was actually pretty slow; a pleasant surprise for me! I got off at 11:30, drove like mad to our friend's house and walked in the door just in time to ring in the new year with my husband and have a glass of champagne!

I am TRYING not to panic but I can't believe this is happening now with my ankle! All I can do is ice, ice, ice, motrin, motrin, motrin, and wait it out! Do you know of any foods that are supposed to promote healing? I read something about pineapple so I will be eating lots of that.

April - My body did get used to it. The important thing is to get enough rest to repair any damage that might happen. Once your body repairs itself, it is usually stronger and can handle things that it couldn't before.

From seeaprilrun on Fri, Jan 02, 2009 at 15:58:42

Burt-that is good to hear. I was starting to wonder if I would always be alternating sides of the road and angry ankles for my entire running career since the only way to get away from banked roads is a treadmill!

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Jan 05, 2009 at 13:13:22

What this event tells me on top of your high-school background - your brain still remembers how to run fast. But the rest of your body is still not ready for it. This is dangerous because you have the ability to run your body into the ground on a whim.

In light of the situation I would recommend a year of base mileage + occasional low-ambition races to test your progress before trying any forms of speed. Overtime your body will become capable of tolerating 6:00 pace without injuries, and your aerobic capabilities will catch up as well. Once that happens, you should be able to run a 5 K around 19:00 - I believe neurologically you are already there, you just lack aerobic support and injury resistance of the body.

From seeaprilrun on Mon, Jan 05, 2009 at 17:25:22

Sasha--I believe you are 100% correct. My injury resistance is apparently rather puny. When you talk about base mileage, do you have numbers for suggestions? 6 miles a day or so...for a long time...and then build up slowly? I really love to race--do you think an occasional short race throughout the year will hurt? I can see that clearly my body is not ready for half-marathon or marathon training. It is hard to NOT

From seeaprilrun on Mon, Jan 05, 2009 at 17:26:30

okay got cut off there--anyways it is hard to not run hard--I like to run hard. It is sort of cleansing.

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Jan 05, 2009 at 18:04:51

I think racing a distance up to 10 K once a month will be fine. 6 miles a day to start might be a good idea. Give yourself a little cushion on the pace - e.g if you think 9:00 is OK, run a bit slower just to be safe - 9:20. Some short relaxed strides at about 6:30 pace for about 15-20 seconds would be OK as well. If you feel itching to go fast, run the devil out of you with 4-5 minutes of hard running, then jog the rest of the way.

Thank-you very much for your input Sasha. Now I will be off to cross-training for a few weeks while my ankle heals.
