Personal:

I was a single mom.  Two times over.  We all survived, despite the fact that I make atrocious decisions.  Then, I met a man I didn't deserve.  And he loves me so much.  And I love him. We lived in sin and bought a house for two years then hired a judge and officially got married(to our great delight and also the delight of our mothers), then a month later he was diagnosed with cancer.  Well we survived all that and he's 100% fine now.  But, we're really out of shape and really busy with kids and jobs and running just isn't my priority and there's so many other layers to all of it, but I'm running anyway.  This is my failure blog now.  Just to log that one run a week if I snag it.
Somehow that matters and I want that run recorded.

Same route as yesterday in 1:10:22/8:14 pace.  Had to fight the wind in places but overall a good run.  Felt good.  Can't wait for my 10k on the 11th.  Big PR coming I hope!  I'm going to go register for it today. My husband had eggs and toast and jelly ready for me when I was done.

Felt a little soreness in the left quad at work last night.  It was gone this morning, but I decided to go extra slow today anyway as a precaution.  We were under wind advisory with 40mph gusts, that coupled with the drizzling rain that was stinging my face and the fact that I was tired made it easy to go slow.  1:13:29/9:01 pace.  Stuffed my guts with french toast for breakfast.  Went and signed up for the 10K yesterday!

First 4 miles in 34:37/8:39 pace.  Then 1 mile at what I felt was a realistic 10K race pace--fast but comfortable and I was not fatigued at all after only one mile of it--7:18, which would calculate to a 45:21 10K, so, if conditions are good I may get my 45 minute 10k next week.  I feel more confident about the pace being sustainable.  ran 3 more miles for a time of 31:23/7:50 pace average for the last 4.  Finally had a breakthrough in my weight today.  I have been at a plateau for several months now--it may just be a fluke but we will see.  I have not changed my eating habits--they are pretty healthy--I am just seeing if gradually higher mileage eventually would translate into a little weight loss if I was patient and I think it may.  I'm not exactly sure what weight I should go for.  I am 5'1".  I weighed 103 pre-pregnancy,  but weighed 98 in high school. I am thinking I will just let my weight decide for itself and not do anything special to lose more.

1:14/8:18 pace.  Surprised me since I felt like I was crawling in the heat and wind.  70 degrees tdoay and sunny(last week my run was post-blizzard through snow--only in Kansas!--the bipolar weather capital of the world).  Anyways I am not used to the heat, and it was windy today, 25mph with 35mph gusts.  Guess I better get used to it.  Heat and wind will be the story of my running life this summer!  I ran a smidgen extra today so I could hit my first 50 mile week!  Yahoo!

1:09:40/8:09 pace.  Felt great today.  23 degrees but sunny and no wind.  I was cruising quite comfortably and just had a lot of spring in my step.  I hope I feel that way on Saturday!  I plan on trying to really slow the pace down tomorrow and  run real slow--give my legs some recovery.

As promised to myself, I exercised restraint today and took it very, very easy.  It was hard because it was beautiful, sunny, and breezy, 40 degrees, and I felt great.  I kept putting myself in check again and again.   1:13:43/9:03 pace.  I think 40 degrees is actually my ideal running temperature.  I prefer to be a little cool rather than warm.

Still holding the reigns in and taking it very easy.  Ran super easy except for 7 short(50-100 meter) bursts of 10K race pace--just trying to get a handle on what the pace feels like.  Time was 1:16:21/8:56 pace.  Will probably run 4 or 5 super slow tomorrow just to stay loose.  Looks like I will be bringing 4 of my kids with me to the race--early morning for us Saturday!  Jesse, my 14 year old, will have to keep track of all his little siblings while I run.  Knowing my children are unattended in all those crowds of people will just make me run faster so I can be with them!

Had two toddlers(Vanessa and Leo), Nick, and Ian all morning.  Jesse wasn't much help but that's okay.  At naptime I went out for a very, very, very slow 4 miles.  Felt phantom pains all over the place the first mile--I was convinced I was badly injured--boy my nerves are jangly!  Of course the body-wide phantom pains disappeared by the second mile.  Geez I can't believe how nervous I am about this race--ridiculous!  I will be waking the kids up early so they can get fed and loaded up in the van tomorrow morning.  It is about a 35 minute drive and then I've got to get them all settled in a designated area where I can find them after the race.  I will be lucky to get much of a warmup in.  Neither Grandma is available to help tomorrow and David will be at work.  I'm loading the van now.  Stroller-check, water bottles-check, snacks-check, phone for me and phone for Jesse-check, changes of clothes for the little ones-check, blankets-check, some sweats for me-check, diaper bag-check, man if you are going to go ANYWHERE for more than an hour or so with this many kids you have to bring EVERYTHING!

44:29 was what the clock said when I crossed the finish line, but I don't know my official time so I may be off a second.  Anyways,  I'm PUMPED.  Slaughtered my PR by almost 5 minutes.  Anyways, got the kids up early, drank a cup of coffee and ate a banana, then drank a cup of water, loaded up, and drove to the course.  We got there with an hour to spare.  There was a playground right by the finish line!  I couldn't have asked for a better setup than that!  Warmed up with about 10 or 15 minutes of slow jogging and one burst of race pace, then found the starting line and lined up about 5 minutes before we were off.  There was a ton of people there.  Anyways, I took off at what I thought was about the right pace, trying not to get overexcited.  1K split was 4:15.  A little fast.  Can't remember my 2k exactly but it was 8 something.  Still a little fast.  Saw my kids cheering for me when we passed by the playground around the 4k mark.  Then we ran through a bunch of people lined up cheering for us and that was actually really awesome and made me run faster.  Crossed 5K in 22:13 still feeling pretty good and just kept plugging away.  Somewhere between 6k and 7k it started to get harder.  I just kept telling myself to relax.  Relax. Tempo.  Relax. Tempo.  That was what I kept repeating over and over in my head.  Don't know why!  Anyways legs were feeling clompy like my feet were slapping really hard, but around 8k that feeling seemed to pass.  I started to push at 8k knowing that I was probably slowing down.  Concentrated on form and staying relaxed.  Crossed 9k at 40something and knew if I wanted under 45 minutes I better turn it on.  I turned it on, dropped into a dead sprint as soon as I could see the finish line, and when I was coming down the home stretch I could see the clock was 44 something so I was grinning like a fool when I crossed the finish line!  Not to mention my kids were screaming at me to sprint!  I am very happy with this race!  I feel like I had some left when I finished so at my next 10k in a month I will not be afraid to push a little harder--I now know that at this pace I will not blow up and die before the finish.  Leg tiredness seems to be what slows me down in the end more than my breathing.  My breathing felt pretty good and controlled the whole race.  I will have to keep plugging away at those strength drills.  Anyways everyone have a great Easter!

1:14:56/8:15 pace. Surprisingly, no soreness from Saturday's race today, although I could feel it a bit in my quads yesterday.  Weird.  Usually I feel it more in my hamstrings.  Pace felt super-easy today.  Paid for my Easter sins in a little weight(they were fantastic cadbury cream egg, margarita, chips and queso, and cake sins).  I will be good all week and it should go away!  Had a boiled egg, milk, and a few pieces of my homemade whole grain banana bread.  I made it with ground wheatberries, amaranth, rolled oats, brown sugar, and olive oil, so it counts as pretty healthy I think.  Not nearly as grainy as I thought it would be.

1:10:50/8:42 pace.  Took it easy today.  Feeling some little nagging aches and pains--the ones I get when it is time for new shoes.  I ordered them yesterday so hopefully they get here within the week.  This will be a long week--I have clinicals this weekend.  Yuck.

1:20:44/8:53 pace.  Took the pace really easy today as suggested by Eric and Camille.  No nagging aches and pains like I had yesterday but it is good to be cautious.  I also took 800mg of motrin before bed last night as a precaution.  Yesterday I was running on asphalt and today I ran on dirt and I think that makes a big difference..  My joints like dirt much better!  I am so glad that nothing hurt today and all was well.  It was gorgeous running weather--fifty degrees, nice cooling breeze, and sunny.   Very enjoyable run!

1:12:31/8:29 pace.  I really meant to take it super easy today, but when I was close to the one west mile mark running e getting ready to turn down goldenrod I saw something I have never seen out here on the dirt roads--ANOTHER RUNNER.  He was running east and turned before I did.  Naturally I picked it up and caught him.  He looked very young, maybe 20 and I introduced myself and told him I had never seen another runner out here.  He didn't have much to say so I passed him and moved along.  About 1/2 mile later he comes huffing and puffing past me, gaps me, and then slows down.  I am quickly reeling him in when he disappears down a driveway and I don't see him again.  Check out the way he was dressed--keep in mind it is almost 60 degrees and sunny--downright hot for me.  He is wearing long basketball shorts, some kind of t-shirt with a long-sleeve flannel shirt over it(unbuttoned and flapping in the breeze) and a stocking cap.  I'll be surprised if I ever see him again.

Oh yeah, yesterday I signed for an all women's 5K on the 25th.  There are usually well over 1,000 participants and apparently they have an awesome awards ceremony and it is a really neat event.  I haven't been in a 5K since my first one ever in October which was 24:50--the first half of my 10K last week was 22:13 so I guest that would be my pr.  I'll probably shoot for a 21:30? I dunno I'm thinking maybe I will experiment a little bit--try going out at a suicidal pace and see what happens?  Or start conservative and then take off?

1:18:03/8:36 pace.  I really thought I was holding the reigns in and was running really easy.  Got my new shoes this morning and I could tell the difference immediately in my run.  Old ones only have 333 miles on them and they are not so hot.  I either need to find higher quality shoes and pay a little more if they last longer, or I need to find cheaper ones that work if I am going to replace them every two months.  These shoes are sooo comfortable though!(for about 300 miles) Did 2 sets of strength drills afterward.

8 loops at 4am at a trotting 8:57 pace.  Now I am drinking my morning coffee and will be off to clinicals shortly.  Did a little barefoot(okay sockfoot--I'm a wimp) running in the pasture yesterday.  Felt good, very light and not a pounding sensation at all.  I really liked it.  My husband is going to mow me a nice path that will be rock, stick, and sticker free so I can do more little barefoot runs.  Should help with injury resistance!

1:19:00/8:42 pace.  Took it easy.  My feet and back were hurting from the long week on my feet last night.  Today they felt okay but took it easy anyway just to be sure.  Very pleasant run.  Tried to drink water at the halfway point by my house.  My husband held the cup out and I tried to drink and run at the same time and it did not work!  I got water all over my face and my shirt but not a drop in  my mouth!  I threw the cup down and sprinted off yelling WAHOO mostly for the benefit of my boys since they were on their bicycles enjoying the spectacle.  I guess I need some practice.

1:06:32/8:10.  Felt great today!  Did not push the pace, but nor did I hold the reigns in!  Just ran however fast I felt like running--but always at a comfortable pace.  Such a nice run!  The sun was shining, the breeze was cool and refreshing, the birds were singing--I felt joyful!  Now I am off to a nice big breakfast courtesy of my husband!

1:22:08/9:03 pace.  I was on a mission today to take it very very easy and mission accomplished.  Enjoyed my run.  Tried again today to drink water out of a cup on the run.  I splashed it all over my face and shirt again but this time actually got two good gulps down.  So, there is improvement. My wonderful husband is outside mowing my grass track for barefoot running, and is going to rake all the sticks and rocks out of the path.  I can't wait to try it out!

1:19:14/8:45 pace.  Ran mostly easy except for three bursts of practice 5K race pace since I am running a 5k on Saturday.  I was trying to get a feel for a pace that is comfortably very hard.  Did a run-by with gatorade and while I still got it all over my face and shirt I successfully swallowed quite a bit as well.  It is supposed to be windy this weekend so that stinks.  It's an all-women's 5k and the turnout is usually around 1200 so I think this will be a really fun event.

Well that was just really awesome!  It was an all women's 5k--a field of 1027 I believe the announcer said.  It was overcast and very humid and windy but the wind helped balance out the humidity so the conditions were not bad at all.  My sister-in-law Sasha and I drove to the race together.  We jogged around a little while to warm up and that was about it.  My legs felt ready to go.  We lined up, the horn blew, and I found my comfortably very hard pace that I have been practicing.  Surprisingly, I found myself in 5th place at the 1 mile mark--6:52.  I still felt really good and just kept going.  I was pretty close to 4th place so I finally passed her.  Third took a little longer but I passed her at the end of the second mile.  I was still feeling good so I decided to go after 2nd place(I was pretty incredulous at this point that I was up front, what is going on?!?).  Anyways I got next to the second place girl and got up the wind to surge and pass her and then I was scared that they would all come pass me so I was running pretty hard to stay on pace.  Someone started yelling at me to go after first.  I could see her and the bicycle so I just concentrated on relaxing and going after her.  She was slowing down and I was closing the gap but we were too close to the finish for me to catch her.  She finished 16 seconds ahead of me.   I am happy with my time and very happy with my placing!  I was not totally drained after the race at all and I think I could have pushed the pace harder so at my next 5k I will push harder.  I would like to go under 21 minutes on my next try!  Sasha did awesome she got 7th place overall with a 22:14!  We are going to start going to races together!  She placed first in her age group at a 5k last weekend and this weekend took 17 seconds off her time!  The awards ceremony was like being on an episode of Oprah!  It was  gym full of women and everybody cheered for everybody.  I had to stand on this podium thingy with the top 3 and hold my bouquet while they took all these pictures.  I felt like I was at the olympics or something it was crazy!  All of the top 10 got a handcrafted ceramic plate, a bouquet of flowers, a $40 gift certificate to some online fitness store, another $15 gift certificate to road ID, and some chapstick.  Craziness!  Madness!  They go all out at this 5k!  I will definitely be back next year!  It was totally worth the drive!  Went for a 3 mile recovery run at a very slow pace after I picked the kids up and put Vanessa down for her nap.

1:14:33/8:13 pace.  It rained and stormed all night last night so the roads were pretty wet.  I ran through running water on the road a total of 8 times(it was shallow running water though).  I thought the water in my shoes would bother me but it really didn't.  I actually really enjoyed my run and felt like a kid running through mud puddles.  Just ran at the pace my body felt like running.  Did two sets of strength drills afterward.

1:15:18/8:18 pace.  It was wet and drizzly today.  Started out slow, felt better after about 2.5 miles and ran at moderate effort for a while, then slowed down the last mile.  I found a picture of myself running during the 5k on line and it is a HORRID picture taken at a horrid angle and at a really bad millisecond in time(the camera definitely added 10 pounds)...but it looks to me as if I have lousy running form and need to try to clean it up.  I worked on that today--fingers loosely curled, arms back and forth, feet landing underneath me, toes straight ahead, relaxed. blah blah blah.

1:20:56/9:00 pace.  Took it super easy today.  Took one different road that was very rocky and uneven but it forced me to take a slow pace so that was alright.  Very hot and humid.  It started to thunder so the last half mile so I booked it home--a Kansas thunderstorm is not something to be caught out in, and tornado season is here.
