Personal:

I was a single mom.  Two times over.  We all survived, despite the fact that I make atrocious decisions.  Then, I met a man I didn't deserve.  And he loves me so much.  And I love him. We lived in sin and bought a house for two years then hired a judge and officially got married(to our great delight and also the delight of our mothers), then a month later he was diagnosed with cancer.  Well we survived all that and he's 100% fine now.  But, we're really out of shape and really busy with kids and jobs and running just isn't my priority and there's so many other layers to all of it, but I'm running anyway.  This is my failure blog now.  Just to log that one run a week if I snag it.
Somehow that matters and I want that run recorded.

9:04 average pace.  Slow and easy.  The roads were squishy from the storm last night but that's okay with me. One week away from my first half-marathon!  Only super duper easy  miles from here out!

8:50 average pace.  Nice and easy on the dirt roads.  Taped my foot for the run but was doing okay without the tape so I will try not taping on Wednesday or Thursday for a shorter run and see how it feels.  I slept in and ran in the heat but I am trying to acclimate myself because it is supposed to be a 100 degree day for the race Saturday which means during the morning of the race it will probably be in the high 80s to the low 90's toward the end.  I'd better get used to it now!  I am determined to eat right all week so I  am starting the day off with a big bowl of raisin-walnut oatmeal and milk.  I am even going to give up my daily scoop of ice cream and eat sugar-free jello and fruit instead! Just wait 'til after the race though then I WILL have my ice cream!

8:44 average pace.  I think I am going to go back to my good 'ol cheaper asics from now on.  They feel good on my feet and they saw me through a lot of mileage with no injuries.  Bye-bye expensive running shoes.  I think I will wear these shoes for the race on Saturday. I'm going to get my pink asics out of retirement too.  Taped my foot but it feels really good.  I thought about not taping tomorrow but have decided that I will tape until the foot is 100% just to be sure.  It really is doing great today.  I have perfected my taping technique so I shouldn't tear any more skin :)

8:52 average pace. Threw in 1/2 mile at half marathon pace just to practice.  Taped the foot and it is still holding up well.  In less than 72 hours I will have my first 1/2 under my belt!  Off to banana, milk, and wheat toast with peanut butter for breakfast.

9:02 average pace.  Got that pre-race paranoia where I think every step is my last before I'm suddenly injured and can't race.  Finally just quit running and went home so I could stop being paranoid.  Everything is holding up well, foot is 90% recovered from the PF.  No run tomorrow, and hopefully I am fresh legged and chipper Saturday morning.

That was tough.  We arrived the night before with our whole family and friends to camp at the lake and drove the course.  Right away I realized this was not a regular 'ol road race.  About 2/3 of the race is on gravel, rocks, and dirt.  And the hills, oh my.  Up, down, up, down.  Steep little monsters.  Tons of them.

Areas of rather treacherous footing.  After driving the course I realized I would not be getting the time I wanted, but I would at least race for place.  So....fast forward to the morning of the race.

Woke up, had my 1/2 cup of coffee and a little gatorade, ate a banana, and off to the start.  Taped my foot although the PF is mostly gone.  Felt okay, jogged around a bit to warm up.  The officials wished us luck, said a prayer, and we were off.  This wasn't a big race at all--115 runners altogether including the relay runners.

1.  6:57 mostly flat on gravel but not too rocky.  Feel good and comfortable

2.  7:17 still not too bad drink a little water at the aid station at the very end because wow it seems hot

3.  7:19 Stomach is a little queasy after that water but I'm pretty much okay

4.  7:36  Get onto some pavement in the town of Marion but a lot of uphill.  The queasy is turning into nausea so I just dump some water over my head to keep cool at the aid station because I can't drink anything

5.  7:30 I am nauseated. not good.

6.  8:11 headwind. rocky gravel. hills.  footing is not so good.  so nauseated.

7.  7:49 on a deeply rutted road, if that is what you want to call it.  trying to pick a smooth ride and keep my ankles out of the ruts.  See my sweet husband cheering for me!  I grab a cup at the aid station thinking it is water and dump it over my head to keep cool and sure enough it is warm, sticky, orange gatorade running down my hair and face.  Nice. I catch a taste of it and almost start heaving.  My husband has a lovely picture of me dumping the gatorade over my head.

8.  7:40  Starting to get back to the lake.  I am hot and thirsty but too sick to my stomach to drink

9.  8:07 Hills hills hills.  steep little monsters, 12% grade per my garmin data. up down up down up down I am crawling slower and slower up these things

10.  7:48 Struggling.  Survival mode.  Don't care about anything but finishing.  I don't dare look at my watch because I'm afraid to know how slow I am going.

11.  7:53 Struggling.  Nausea. up down up down

12.  8:23  My legs just die. done.  We go down into these rocky alcoves in the lake and back up.  Big rocks and the footing is treacherous.  My foot is killing me.  I get passed by 2nd place here and she takes the lead.  I don't even put up a fight.  She keeps looking behind her and I want to wave her on and tell her not to worry I am not going to catch her. up down up down

13.  only. 81 per my garmin it measures this course as a bit short.  time is 6:15, 7:42 pace.  I try to look good crossing the finish line and promptly walk over to my husband, lean on him, and retch.  Ugh.

Recovered a bit and went and talked to the girl who won. She was really sweet.  Her feet were stinging from the rocks, she had worn racing flats not realizing what the terrain was going to be like.  She beat me by 36 seconds.  Third place was 10 minutes behind me.

Honestly I am pretty disappointed in myself with this race.  I wish I knew why I was so nauseated.  Not hydrating for the entire race was probably not helpful but I couldn't drink.  And boy, do I need to learn to run hills.  I stink at hills.  Today my foot is much better but my quads are a mess.  Stairs are rough on me today.  On the upside, the flat, certified 1/2 marathon in Wichita next month on pavement is going to feel like a walk in the park compaired to this thing and boy do I plan to FLY and redeem myself.  All the volunteers at the race were great and they had lots of aid stations for me to dump water over myself.  I got a bottle filled with skittles and a pacifier for my age division award :).  It is a race to benefit the mothers of young children so a cause I am all about!  I like the blue shirt and the breakfast afterward was great.  I couldn't eat much but my husband ate it! Had a blast camping all weekend with the family and friends.  We tubed and boated on the water, grilled, ate smores, and sat around the campfire and talked.  The kids had a BLAST!

9:38 average pace.  My quads are still wrecked.  Minced gingerly along for the first two miles while my quads shrieked and then they kinda warmed up and I shuffled four more miles.  That is enough for today.  Hopefully this soreness is gone by the end of the week.  Did some stretching and hopefully a warm shower helps.

9:34 average pace.  Still sorer than I have ever been in my life but much better than yesterday.  Took a few miles before I warmed up and my quads didn't wince with every step.  I will be running very slow all week--I'm an injury-prone runner and this is a vulnerable time period so I need to very careful.  Foot is recovering nicely but not 100%--it would probably be 100% by now if I had not gone and raced on it.  Next week I will really get back to normal.

8:44 average pace.  Wow, Eric was right, almost back to normal today.  Foot feels great.  I felt good on my run today, not good enough to run fast(I have no desired for that whatsoever yet), but good enough to feel....good!  Took it easy, did my first experiment regarding nausea and running.  Ate a banana and chugged gatorade immediately before starting to run, and chugged gatorade(2 different flavors) 3 times throughout the run.  No nausea.  So, at least I know it is not the gatorade or the banana in and of itself that causes nausea.  More experiments to follow in the coming weeks.

8:40 average pace.  Ran mostly easy but threw one 7:09 mile in to stretch my legs a bit.  Felt pretty good but my legs don't have much zip in them.  Foot is doing well but still not 100%.  I suspect it will be at least a few weeks before it is completely healed.  Still taping and now running in a brand new pair of asics gel equation 2--a shoe that has never did me any wrong.  I will probably stick to these shoes from now on.

8:10 average pace pushing Vanessa in the stroller.  Was meeting the girls for breakfast in west Wichita to plan Melissa's baby shower and there is this great park out there with lots of bike paths so me and Vanessa went and ran there before breakfast.  I meant to run slower but saw other runners and just had to speed up and pass them.  Will I ever learn?  Anyways the first few miles were slow but then I dropped a few sub 8's to make sure I was good and ahead of the other runners I passed.  I am so ridiculous.  Will do more later during Vanessa's nap(slowly, for real this time).

P.M. 4 loops easy at 8:41 pace.  Tried to "Chi" run the last mile.  Leaned the entire body ever so slightly forward, tried to let my feet land underneath me, tucked my tummy and gut in. Felt kinda strange but it was the fastest mile(8:10) with no increase in effort that I was aware of.  Interesting.

8:31 average pace.  Seemed awful stiff this morning, started out with a few rickety 9:30 miles and things finally warmed up.  Towards the end foot started bugging a bit so I sped up since running faster makes the foot feel better--strange but I think I run with better form at higher speeds so it is easier on my foot.  Anyways last couple of miles at 7:30 pace.  Off day tomorrow and I am going to talk to my friend about a massage she is very good and may know some tricks to help my foot.  Have 18 miles planned for Monday, which will be my longest run to date.  This month depending on how the long runs go I may or may not shelve the October marathon.  It just depends if this foot is not going to heal by October than I don't want to run a marathon on it and risk my first marathon ever being a painful blow-up. We will see my foot is not getting any worse but I would sure like to see some more marked improvement soon.

8:15 average pace.  The plan was to go 18 today but I was watching a storm off to the west and sure enough it began to roar up and head my way.  Abandoned ship toward the end and it was thundering and lightning pretty good as I ran a rather brisk last mile to get home.  I don't mind getting rained on but I will not risk getting struck by lightning.  Anyways, foot was holding up very well, the only part it got unhappy about was when I was on asphalt.  Felt like it would have been fine for 6 more miles if the weather had not stopped me.  I am encouraged today.  Slow and rickety start as always.  Splits 9:27/9:16/8:53/8:24/8:11/8:08/7:53/7:47/7:45/8:05/8:02/7:10, last little bit 6:29 pace.

8:38 average pace.  Rainy and windy.  At first the wind made the rain sting and it hurt but after a while I got used to it and it felt nice.  Unmotivated at first but got to feeling good.  Got nice and soaking wet and run through lots of puddles.  It was nice to feel cool on a run for a change. Will probably go really easy tomorrow and then try for an 18 miler again on Friday.  Saturday I have to work a night shift so I really don't want to combine that with a long run and end up injured.

9:20 average pace.  Took it very easy--strolled along and enjoyed the lovely cooler weather and the sunshine.  Everything felt great, including my foot.  Had a huge breakfast afterwards and feeling very relaxed.   Needed to rest up as I am planning 18-20 tomorrow incorporating both half-marathon and marathon pace miles.  It will be an experiment to see how the foot holds up and to practice re-fueling at higher intensity running and find out what my "nausea threshold" is and how to avoid it.

8:05 average pace.  Woke up at 6am to beat the heat, ate a piece of toast and jelly, drank some water, and hit the road.  Noticed that they had graded the dirt roads so they were unfortunately rather rocky in places.  Decided that I would run the whole thing on dirt anyway and just slow down on the rocky parts, because I don't want to aggravate my foot by running on asphalt when it is doing so well.  Decided protecting my foot was more important than pace.  Took Julie's advice and started slow, drifted into a better pace in the middle, and finished strong.  Felt very strong at the end and could have easily kept going but no need to push it too hard.  Foot was feeling good and wanted to end on a  high note.  Also squatted and peed behind a push for the very first time on a run and it was not nearly as scary as I thought it would be.  I am worried about having to go pody during a marathon but if there is something to squat behind I suppose I will be okay.  Overall a good run for me.

8:29 average pace.  Feeling pretty good, finished the last mile at a pretty fast clip.  Thinking about a 5k on September 5th.  It is on a fairly flat certified course and I would like to break 20 on a course I know to be accurately measured--plus I need some redemption from my half-marathon.

Bad bad day at work yesterday.  First a drowned 3 year old followed by a futile resuscitation.  Pumped that kid full of just about every drug in my arsenal on the way to the hospital.  Less than 5 hours later took a pulseless, apneic 3 week old out of its screaming mother's arms and attempted yet another futile resuscitation.  Neither kid made it.  Two pediatric codes in one shift is rather unusual.  Didn't sleep much last night, finally got up.  Ankles need a break from camber on the dirt roads and my foot doesn't like asphalt so went to the rubberized track at the high school.  Ended up doing a little speed just to break up the monotony. Ran 4.5 slow, then a 91 second 400, 400 recovery, 90 second 400, 400 recovery, 34 second 200, 200 recovery, must be tired now 36 second 200, jogged a few miles, 88 second 400, this one felt much easier than the other two, jogged a mile to cool down.  Then slipped off my shoes and socks and did a quarter mile barefoot on the astroturf.  Felt pretty good.

8:22 average pace. Shouldn't have ran on the track yesterday my foot is newly angry. Back to the dirt roads today to tame the beast. Sigh. If I cannot handle 9 miles on the track then I don't see how 26.2 on asphalt is going to work. Off to work and then maybe 4 hours of sleep if I am lucky afterward since I have to get up at 4am tomorrow to make it to Hutchinson by 0630 for a clinical and then after that I will be exhausted so doubt I will be able to squeeze a run in tomorrow.

slept 3 hours.  Got up at 4am and made the drive to Hutchinson.  Had a busy day in ICU clinicals then drove to friends where my family was waiting with dinner.  Ate chili with cheese and crackers, drank a pina colada, and had ice cream.  Got stuffed felt guilty.  Did 15 minutes of abs and decided I was too tired to function.  Good night everyone.
