Personal:

I was a single mom.  Two times over.  We all survived, despite the fact that I make atrocious decisions.  Then, I met a man I didn't deserve.  And he loves me so much.  And I love him. We lived in sin and bought a house for two years then hired a judge and officially got married(to our great delight and also the delight of our mothers), then a month later he was diagnosed with cancer.  Well we survived all that and he's 100% fine now.  But, we're really out of shape and really busy with kids and jobs and running just isn't my priority and there's so many other layers to all of it, but I'm running anyway.  This is my failure blog now.  Just to log that one run a week if I snag it.
Somehow that matters and I want that run recorded.

A little discouraged.  Once again, I managed to finish one of these short races with way too much left in the tank.  It seems like once I really get cooking it's over.  I need to learn how to race and push harder in these short races.  I started out pretty good, didn't look at my watch but was in second place when the dust settled in the 2nd kilometer.  I was trailing the girl who won last year with a 19:30 so I figured if I kept contact with her that would be about right.  I stayed in range of her the whole time and then kicked about a quarter mile out and was closing the gap fast but ran out of race before I caught her--beat me by 3 seconds.  I could talk in full sentences immediately and knew this was not a good effort or true reflection of my capabilities.  I should have picked up the pace, passed her, and gone for it much sooner in the race.  I am disappointed-I know I have at least a 19:30 in me!  I am eyeballing a redemption 5k next weekend.  Bad idea or good idea?  I feel like I need the confidence boost of a 5k PR before my next marathon.  Warmed up 3.36 miles at 8:46 AP and did 5 strides off the line.  Cooled down 4.22 miles with Eddy at 8:35 AP, stopping a few times to field phone calls since I am the on-call nurse through until Monday.  I spent the awards ceremony in my car talking to a client and a doctor.  Next I ate lunch with my husband and then had to drive my sweat stinky self in running clothes to a client's house and send them to the hospital.  It has been a non-stop crazy on-call weekend and shows no sign of letting up.

First, GREAT RUN!! and NO PUKE ZONE FOR a second place!? YOU are running really well. How does this race compare to last years in July? How about a quick half marathon?

From SlowJoe on Sun, Sep 05, 2010 at 01:01:38 from 214.13.130.104

That's still a great pace but I understand thinking you've got a better 5K time in you. Being on-call probably didn't help either. Give it a go next weekend, now that you have a better idea of what kind of pace to set. Unless it's taking the place of a long run or something, why not?

Nice to get second place!

I think to equal your PR in marathon training is pretty good work. I find the exact same with 5Ks-it takes a bit of work before I can get to the stage where I can race it and actually get out of breath. The aerobic fitness is there but I am not able to make use of it due to the legs not being used to running that fast.

WOW!!!!! I am in awe of your time. And to think you can run even faster than that!!!!! :) :) :)

Sorry about your super crazy weekend. Hope it let's up so that you can enjoy it a bit.

Looking forward to seeing what you decide to do about the redemptive 5K. :) :) :)

I know you are disappointed, but what a great time! Like Chris said, you are training for something different right now and your body is used to the steady MP that you have been training for. I know you have a faster time in you, but don't be down that you can't hit it right now. You'll get there!

Julie--this race was very flat like my PR course last year but had boatloads of 90 degree turns. The dude who is measuring races around here is way too into his corners. Good practice for the marathon though I guess!

Joe--I think I will go for it again next weekend, but now I am having a hard time trying to decide between a 5k and rare 15k next weekend--with no half-marathon to race pre-marathon the 15k may be the next best thing

Chris--That makes me feel better. Thanks! I was feeling pretty down like maybe I was just turning into a wimp that is afraid of pain(maybe I am anyways) but I think you are right and I bet if I wasn't running so much mileage and raced 5ks regularly my times would be way better!

Teena--I am in awe of your abilily to run one marathon after another--I don't even recover for at least a month after my marathons and can't stomach the though of another for at least 3 months!

Tracy--thanks! I hope so!

April, I think you should not limit yourself on the 5k, go for the hard pace. You know you can keep the pace for the full 3.1 miles. Leave no gas in the tank !

Hope you do great in your next race !
