Personal:

I was a single mom.  Two times over.  We all survived, despite the fact that I make atrocious decisions.  Then, I met a man I didn't deserve.  And he loves me so much.  And I love him. We lived in sin and bought a house for two years then hired a judge and officially got married(to our great delight and also the delight of our mothers), then a month later he was diagnosed with cancer.  Well we survived all that and he's 100% fine now.  But, we're really out of shape and really busy with kids and jobs and running just isn't my priority and there's so many other layers to all of it, but I'm running anyway.  This is my failure blog now.  Just to log that one run a week if I snag it.
Somehow that matters and I want that run recorded.

What a day!  I am STOKED!  I feel GREAT!  My strategy today was to go out fast enough to not get caught up in the crowd, and then cool it and rock steady for the middle miles, and then pound it home hard for the last mile or two.  This is a huge huge race with 3,000 or so I believe in the 10k(okay that's huge to me).  Anyways I lined up toward the front, and went out pretty hard.  There was gray shirt girl to my right and ahead of me.  I was about twenty yards behind her or so through the first mile--6:36.  Yikes.  A little fast but I feel good and the pace does not feel strained.  I tell myself to cool it there are still 5.2 miles to go. 2-mile split is 13:40.  Okay I meant to cool it but not that much.  I pick it up a notch, still on gray shirt's tail and I can see hot pink lady ahead of her.  3-mile split it twenty something.  Good.  Under 21 minutes and I want to stay sub-7.  We hit the turn around, out of the wind now, so it feels hot all of the sudden.  I still feel good.  4-mile split is 27:4?.  Still at sub-7 pace.  I can feel my body starting to work and wanting to get into some sort of groove but I don't want to slow down.  I start repeating the mantra "don't get comfortable" to myself over and over again.  "Relax, don't get comfortable."  I say this to myself pretty much the rest of the race.  Somewhere around here I move past gray shirt girl.  5-mile split is 34:17.  I'm doing a little mental math while I'm running.  Sub-44 is in the bag.  Sub-43 is very possible.  Breathing is hard but I don't feel terribly strained.  Calves are burning a tiny bit.  I like that 5 mile split, so I decide to PUSH.  Only 1.2 miles just PUSH IT.  I pick it up and just start running HARD.  I pass pink shirt lady.  She puts up a fight but I get past her.  It's a ways away, but I can see the douglas street bridge, and I know when I turn that corner I'm home free so I push as hard as I can go without all-out sprinting.  This part of the race, the last mile, hurt the most, I'm a little nauseated. As a tear around the corner someone tells me I am 14th woman.  Better than I expected in this race after looking at last year's times.  I start sprinting all out.  As I tear down the home stretch I see the clock.  42:09, 42:10, 42:11--SERIOUSLY!?  HOLY COW!  I just look at the finish line and go.  42:19 is my guess for finish time--won't know the official results until they are posted in the Sunday paper tomorrow.  I will find out then if I got an age group award--they only do the top 3 overall at this awards ceremony since this is the big riverfest and a lot is going on downtown.  I'm very excited with my time--I did not see this coming!  My two year old Vanessa ran in the tot trot.  She was second in her heat.  I was so proud of her--she knew exactly what to do and just ran straight to the finish line(40 meter dash).   Those little two year olds racing is the cutest thing ever!

Holy cow, April !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

42 ??? You are hot! Awesome time. Your are fast!

I just can't believe it. Darn, you are making it very hard for me.

Now with this, I will never bet with you. ;)

Super job & congrats.

I hope some day to be almost as good as you. =)

Congratulations on a big 10 K PR, and a 5 K PR as well. You had to have run one of the 5 Ks under 21:19. Let do some guessing. Your 3 mile split was probably around 20:40. That puts you at around 21:24 for the first 5 K. This would give you 20:55 for the second 5 K.

But based on the description of the race, my feeling is that there more improvement to come. You say the pace did not feel hard, but you were bothered by breathing. That tells me aerobically you are still behind your neurological potential. Aerobic ability is a lot easier to develop, and it develops quickly for as long as it is still behind your neural drive.

Eric--a little more time injury-free, and I think you will be challenging my times!

Marion--Thanks! I really like this running thing, I should've done it a looooong time ago

Sasha--I want to continue my improvement. You have been right on thus far on your suggestions. Thanks for this blog and the advice! Now I will ask for more. Do I keep doing what I am doing and run "base" mileage(I am up to 8-9 miles a day) with only a little speed here and there for fun? Should I continue to forego speed and tempo runs? I am prone to injury, and I keep this in mind. My plan is to get base mileage into the 10 mile a day range, and then incorporate long runs at some point for a marathon in October, as long as there are no injuries and all systems are a go.

Great job April! That is an awesome run!

You are smokin' fast. That in no way was in reference to the fact that you used to smoke. If I just triggered your addiction I'll never forgive myself. Forget I said anything. JK :) As someone who wasn't living as healthy as I should've been with my weight, I can say I feel 100% better now. How about you?

I feel so much better now that words cannot describe it!

Happy Mother's Day!

April:

Since you still appear to be limited aerobically, you are still in no dire need of formal speed sessions. Being injury prone adds another argument against it. Your plan is good - continue to increase your mileage very gradually, do occasional pickups, time trials, and races.

Right now things are going great. You are improving by leaps and bounds, and not getting injured. Even if you could learn to run 60 miles a week without getting injured and no immediate improvement in short distances (5 K/10K), that still would be good. If you are improving on top of that, that is a nice added bonus. 5 K speed is a serious limiting factor of the marathon performance. When it improves without 5 K specific training, that is really really good for the marathon.

You will know you need to do something different when you plateau using the current approach.

Thanks Sasha. I won't make any changes to my routine.

Hey April, loved reading your race report. You truly raced it and I loved the things you kept repeating to your self. It is true that if you are comfortable in a 10k (especially the second half) you are not working hard enough. Congratulations on the PR, how big of a PR was it for you.

From seeaprilrun on Wed, May 13, 2009 at 15:26:18 from 68.102.144.140

Michelle--it was a 2:11 PR from four weeks ago. My goal for the race was sub-44. Very exciting for me. I felt a bit of disbelief about it and looked the course up on the USATF website to make sure it was certified--which it was.

Well you rocked its socks. Nice new pic btw.
