Personal:

I was a single mom.  Two times over.  We all survived, despite the fact that I make atrocious decisions.  Then, I met a man I didn't deserve.  And he loves me so much.  And I love him. We lived in sin and bought a house for two years then hired a judge and officially got married(to our great delight and also the delight of our mothers), then a month later he was diagnosed with cancer.  Well we survived all that and he's 100% fine now.  But, we're really out of shape and really busy with kids and jobs and running just isn't my priority and there's so many other layers to all of it, but I'm running anyway.  This is my failure blog now.  Just to log that one run a week if I snag it.
Somehow that matters and I want that run recorded.

aaaaaaaa!  No sub-20 today.  What are the chances of running the exact time again?  This is the unofficial time per my garmin but should be close.  Well, I WON!  Totally disappointed in my time but not disappointed in the $100 I went home with.  Now, here is my bag of excuses for the time:  it was pouring rain, I was soaked.  I could hear the water squishing in my shoes the whole time.  Here is the breakdown:

Mile 1--6:47.  uphill all the way.  I start in the lead.  I need to do more hill training.  I can hear my shoes--squish squish squish, lots of mud puddles and splashing

Mile 2--6:51.  I get passed right at the beginning.  I am determined to stay with her.  I let her pull me and never let her gap me by more than 10 meters.  We are on this bike path that curves and turns CONSTANTLY.  I feel like I am breaking stride all the time and turning corners.  Total speed killer.  squish squish squish my shoes are full of water

Mile 3--6:22. We veer of the bike path onto the road and I kick it into gear and pass her.  I stay in gear all the way to the end.  I see the 20:30's on the clock and am disappointed but I am glad I won. I squish all the way to the soggy end.

what happened?  I went out too slow--way too slow.  I wanted to be a little more conservative at the beginning but I totally overdid it.  The course was not a fast PR course but it shouldn't have killed my time that bad.  At the end, alas, I felt I had WAY too much left in the tank.  What have I learned?  I need to know the feel of my target pace and hit it right from the beginning in a 5k, and then just push harder.  I need to do some hill training.  I need to keep working on my fitness.  I may go to a track in a few weeks and do an all-out 5k just to see the underside of 20 if it is possible.  I hope everyone did well in their races today!

arghhhh !!! sorry to hear that April. Rain does not help, but soon, it will fall soon. You do have the fitness.

Cheers!

Sorry for no sub 20 Congrats on getting prize $$. That's exciting. Sasha has told me he's excited about the progress you have made.

From Tracy on Sat, Jun 20, 2009 at 11:32:17 from 173.24.32.153

You shouldn't be disappointed in your performance. You raced to win today, and that's incredible. Sometimes you have to overlook your time (especially given course conditions) for the sake of the race. You knew who your target was and you pushed strong in the end to get her.

If you had started off faster, you may have raced like she did--fast to start off with, but unable to close in the end of the race. You were able to win because you had energy in the tank in the end--she didn't.

Was this an all female race? If so, that makes a big difference because you had no one faster to push you towards your goal. If not, next time set your sights on some of the men in the race.

Congrats on the $100. The sub-20 will come! You have the ability and the training.

Excellent on winning the race but it never makes up does it for not achieving your goal, I wouldnt say thats excuses, the rain would slow you down deffinatly.. sub 20 is yours with the right day weather etc, and competition as well.

Ive won races but not hit my goal and cried on the finnish line allot of people dont understand and think Im too hard on myself but we runners know the pain and the ecstasy of it all... so pat yourself on the back Well Done :-)

Squish, Squish, Squish.....Darn the rain, it caused me an even greater PR in my marathon last year (it rained for 3 1/2 hours)....so in tribute to the song "Blame it on the rain, pourin' down..." It is definitely an obstacle, and an in and out course? Right there grossness!!! So I think you ran awesome. Great uphill mile and way to "squish" it to the end!!! You are officially Elite, $100 Winner!!!! You really deserve a big congrats!!!!!!

April- you are SO amazing!!! You will get it all figured out :) That is one heck of a race. Your sub 20 is coming and it is going to be one heck of a party!!! :) I read your entries and just can't believe how well you do and how much faster you can become, excuse me, are becoming with each race. Same time shmame time... you had a swamp in your shoes ;)

Thanks everybody! I WILL get that sub-20 5k...I just wish it had been today. Too bad I waited until the last mile to show up.

Eric--Thanks!

Sarah--Thanks--it is awful nice to win some money--my husband just got laid off so it couldn't have come at a better time! I'm happy to take $100 off of somebody's hands!

Tracy--there were men in the race, I think I will try your strategy next time and go with a guy running the pace I'm looking for if I start out without much female competition

Sam--thanks..I may just set myself up for success and go run 5k on a track with myself and a watch just to let myself know I can do it(or not if that is the case)--at least learn my pace I am looking for!

Julie--it was sort of a square course..they managed to find some hills in Kansas! They weren't gnarly steep hills or anything but they weren't the fast "flatness" I was anticipating. Great job on your race today!

Burt--you are sure getting faster..it's only a matter of time!

Marion--I can't wait to celebrate sub-20! I know it will happen--the day just hasn't come yet!

Congratulations on losing the amateur status! You can call this a tactical win with a PR repeat. Happens in big races all the time, they jog until the last mile, then start racing.

Was this a certified course? Are the splits from Garmin or the mile markers?

Assuming certified course and accurate mile markers, the last mile shows you'll break 20:00 on a good day on the track no problem. See if you can get a pacer in your area, ideally somebody who runs a lot of miles and can break 18:00 so he won't be struggling running 19:30 and pace you evenly. Maybe a collegiate runner.

Or another idea, find a collegiate track meet and jump into it, show those girls what a mom of five can do. Many girls on smaller college track teams do not break 20:00. Of course, with bad luck you might end up finishing last with even 19:20, but usually not, there is always somebody that is over 20:00 in smaller meets. Just to get an idea, here are the results from a local meet in Ogden, Utah:

From seeaprilrun on Sun, Jun 21, 2009 at 00:09:19 from 68.102.144.140

Sasha--it was a certified course. The mile markers are from the Garmin--I didn't see the ones on the course until I jogged it to cool down afterward. They were written in chalk on the ground--very hard to see in the rain. I think if I could find a pacer that would be fantastic. When I was allowing myself to simply stay with the woman ahead of me rather than setting the pace it seemed easier and I didn't have to concentrate so much(granted that was a slow mile). There is a local high school kid that runs a lot and is quite the cross-country star--19:30 would be a walk in the park for him--perhaps my oldest can hook me up with him for a run...

From seeaprilrun on Sun, Jun 21, 2009 at 10:55:20 from 68.102.144.140

I mean the mile markers were painted on the ground....

From sam Dean-Howard on Sun, Jun 21, 2009 at 16:01:29 from 90.208.239.137

Allie, You will break 20 I wouldnt advise trying to do it alone, a race is so much better you cant replicate the way you feel on race day no matter how much you try, Ive Tried LOts of times it doesnt happen....even then you cant guarantee your race will go to plan as the weather is a right one for interfering with us runners LOL well done :-)

From Kelsey on Mon, Jun 22, 2009 at 20:43:23 from 98.230.3.218

Congrats on a win and a good race, I think it counts as a PR because of the rain. You will easily go under 20 on a good course on a good day!

From Kelli on Sat, Jun 27, 2009 at 14:30:55 from 71.219.76.64

How did I miss this race report? Da!!! Sorry for being so late on the game, but you did great for the conditions! I hate twisty turns, they kill me!

And nothing beats $100 even if you are not thrilled with your time!!!

That sub 20 is biting at your heels, you will get it!
